Recognize text (OCR)

OCR finds the text in scanned pages and adds it as an invisible layer, so you can search, select and copy it. The page itself doesn’t change.

  1. Open Document → Recognize text (OCR)…, or OCR on the Organize tab.
  2. Choose the Language: English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish or Russian.
  3. Enter the Pages (for example 1-3, 5), or leave it empty for all pages.
  4. Choose Recognize. Progress is shown page by page.
  5. Save. The text becomes searchable in the saved PDF.
  • OCR runs in your browser. The first time, it downloads the OCR engine and the language data, so it needs an internet connection and takes longer.
  • Running OCR again on a page replaces that page’s earlier OCR text.
  • Words recognized with low confidence are left out.
  • After Save as → Reduce file size (rasterize), text is no longer selectable; run OCR on the result to make it searchable again.
